Natürlich hat eine Veranstaltung mit gut 10.000 TeilnehmerInnen und einem hohen Einsatz an Engagement, politischem Kapital und materieller Unterstützung auch wichtige und gute Ergebnisse erbracht. Vier würde ich nennen:
- das Forum ist breit genutzt worden, um Vernetzungen weiterzutreiben oder auch zu begründen;
- die politische Sprache der Kultur wurde in vielen gesonderten Veranstaltungen gesprochen;
- es hat eine höchst wichtige Ausweitung der Teilnahme aus Osteuropa gegeben;
- und – als wichtigster Punkt aus meiner Sicht – es hat noch nie ein „großes“ Forum gegegeben, in dem eine derartig starke gewerkschaftliche Präsenz vorhanden war – in meinen Augen ist das sogar wichtigste organisationspolitische Ergebnis des Forums gewesen.
Aber es müssen auch die schwierigen Punkte genannt werden:
Der Vorbereitungsprozess der Veranstaltung war extrem kompliziert und die 
schwedische Seite hat auf der Grundlage eines politischen Bündnisses (Linkspartei, Autonome Linke, attac, Teile der Gewerkschaften und Bewegungen usw.) gearbeitet, das nicht wirklich hielt – auch was attac betrifft. Die internationale Unterstützung auch des Forums hielt sich sehr in Grenzen.- Die Resonanz im Feld der früher für die Forumsbewegung Gewonnenen war gering – die Zahl von 12.000 spricht Bände. Die Beteiligung aus Deutschland war definitiv sehr gering. Die Resonanz in der schwedischen Öffentlichkeit – und auch in der Stadt Malmö – tendierte gegen Null (nur als ein paar Scheiben ums Hilton zu Bruch gingen, war die Weltpresse wieder da). Dasselbe gilt für die Medien in der BRD, eine derartig krasse Ignoranz eines Forums hat es zuvor nie gegeben. Die Organisation des Forums hatte große Defizite, am, deutlichsten erkennbar am Zusammenbruch der Übersetzungen und dem damit verbundenen technischen Desaster. Der falschverstandene Demokratismus eines Teils der Träger führte dazu, das einige Veranstaltungen mit großer Resonanz reihenweise kleinere Veranstaltungen schlichtweg killten. Dem fiel zum Beispiel auch eine Veranstaltung der RLS mit Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak zum Opfer, die nicht nur im Programm falsch angekündigt war und in einem Raum mit doppelter Belegung stattfand, sondern auch mit der größten Veranstaltung des Forums konkurrieren musste – erfolglos, es kam niemand.
- Es gab kein eigentliches geografisches oder politisches Zentrum des Forums, was dazu führte, dass sich die Gesamtheit der Teilnehmer erst am Ende des Forums (bei der Demonstration und der von vielen nicht mehr besuchten Sonntagsabschlußveranstaltungen) wirklich erkennen konnte – ein identitätspolitischer Veranstaltungsfehlgriff erster Güte.
- Inhaltlich hatte ich schon das Problem, dass die aktuelle tiefe Krise des Finanzmarktkapitalismus gerade mal in einer Veranstaltung ausschließlich Thema wohl war (und in vielen in letzter Minute aufgegriffen wurde), es aber nicht versucht wurde in den letzten zwei Wochen, dazu eine massive innen- wie außenwirksame – und auch linke – Positionierung vorzunehmen. Nix. Einen größeren politishen Fehlgriff kann man sich kaum vorstellen.
Die Debatte um den Zustand der Sozialforumsbewegung muss natürlich weitergeführt werden. Es hat eine globalisierungskritische Bewegung gegeben von Seattle bis Genua, die global agierte, Diversität und Pluralität als politische Medium der Kooperation, Strategie, Subjektivität machtvoll entwickelte und politischem 
Aktivismus ein neues Gesicht gab, und – auch wenn sie nord- und männerlastig war – die Möglichkeit der Veränderung wieder aufriss; dann gab es einen zweiten Zyklus, der von 2003 bis 2006 dauerte und sich auf den Kampf gegen den Krieg fokussierte, oft zentralisiert agierte, eine Ein-Punkt-Orientierung nach vorne schob oder schieben musste – in mancherlei Hinsicht ein durch die Größe des Problems erzwungenes Revival des früheren Bewegungstypus also. Diese Phase ist zu Ende seit Rostock – und ob hier ein neuer, dritter Zyklus der sozialen Bewegung entsteht, ist noch offen – wer davon spricht, dass Malmö „ein weiterer folgerichtiger Schritt einer Bewegung“ gewesen sei, unterschlägt, dass die Sozialforumsbewegung in einer tiefen Krise steckt, wofür Malmö ein massiver Beleg war. Welchen Charakter diese Krise aber hat und welche Möglichkeiten sie öffnet, ist noch offen und bedarf der intensiven Debatte, Kooperation und der Experimente.
Thankyou for the most interesting assessment I found so far about ESF in Malmö. But in spite of that it seems well informed there are some facts that are wrong and some additional comments to be made.
1. Your assesment of the strength of Malmö may be complemented by that many other popular movements and not only the trade unions had a stronger presence in Malmö then earlier. The environmentalists had according to the assessment made by Friends of the Earth Europe campaigners far better cooperation than at any earlier ESF. Especially the strong cooperation with Via Campesina is praised as of great importance in a time when Friends of the Earth International has redifned itself from NGO to environmental social movement. But also that friends of the Earth local groups from Helsingborg and Stockholm organised seminars at ESF. While trade unions and leftists from contintental Western Europe and Nordic countries argue a bit after ESF why they avoided each others seminars the tune from Friends of the Earth and Via Campesina is completely different. The cooperation was strong from the very beginning of the process to ESF and will continue at a meeting in Mocambique were Via Campesina have invited FoEI. The peace movement was also strong at ESF in Malmö and in general there were a lot broader representation and unity among different movements than at any ESF earlier, according to Christoph Aguiton more than he had seen att any occasion during his 38 years as activist.
2. You claim that the preparatory process was extremely complicated and than refers to the political alliance behind the ESF in Malmö. Among the groups in the alliance you state the autonomous left, this is wrong, they chosed to completely stand outside and made their own European Action 2008 and Reclaim the Streets with no linkages to ESF others than that they refered to ESF for accomodation and had a bloc in the ESF demonstration with maybe 300 out of 10 000 participants. But they did not complicate the Nordic cooperation.
3. It is also false to claim the the Left Party had a role in a political alliance behind the ESF. There was such propaganda from Attac in Sweden and internationally on false grounds. The left party played no role similar to SWP or the mayors office at ESF in London. Their presence was through educational organisations who are sister organisations to e.g. Rosa Luxemburg stiftung, their strong presence in the solidarity movement, especially among Latin American groups and migrant communities and the anti-war movement as well as students movement. They did not act in a coherent way from party logics but rather in a coherent way according to the interest of ESDF as a whole in a saall city were most available actvists are from left party background and the organisation they represented. In principle it should no be a problem in cooperating between Rosa Luxemburg or Latin Maerican solidarity kind of organisations and Attac but in Sweden it was.
4. There were a lot more severe problems than the translation. Two weeks before the ESF started there were no bookings made for technique equipment for 20 scenes. A person from my hometown had to organise and pay his own friends travels from his own pocket and using his old contacts as an anti-racist and ecological festival organiser to personally convince the sound equipment companies to build trust in ESF again. ESF bureacracy had asked for the price but never booked the equipment. He also found out that it was impossible to get volunteers close to the numbers needed, that there was no way to get food for the volunteers that had to work all the time and did not have time to transport themselves to the other side of the the town to get food and that his volunters had to sleep in cold tents as Swedish bureacracy forbid the use of heating in the tents etc. It was on the brink of resulting in closing down the main scene at the final of the demonstration. Also the economic function was close to brake down but saved by a young social democrat. I as responsible for the Solidarity fund and Central and Eastern European contacts could after a night with counting money and 30 minutes sleep finally hand over the money to the buses going east, to some of them minutes before they left, otherwise quite a lot of of CEE people would have been stranded in Malmö.
5. The problem behind the organisational deficits is similar to the reason why there was such a lack of political focus on current general issues at ESF in Malmö. Both the majority among the NOC board and the majority at European preparatory meetings have been politically anorechtic. Ways to politicize the ESF porcess are blocked, e.g. there is no discussions forum on the website and when Via Campesina proposed that the assembly of social movements should organise a seminar on the mutlidimensional crisis and the linkage of issues the left dominating the European program meeting aborted the attempt quickly. Why Attac Sweden was so much against having a polically motivated ESF in Malmö and came in strong conflict with Friends fo the Earth Sweden about it is still a mystery. But is is certainly not because of complicated preparatory process between autnomous left, Left party and other actors but rather an internal issue within Attac itself and its political anorechtic organisational culture delinking discussion from action. Attac and some of their allies wanted to organise ESF according to the model of a book fair.
6. As you are part of both Attac and Rosa Luxemburg it would be interesting to know how you claim that it is to complicated to have such organisations to cooperate with each other. Furthermore it would be interesting to know how Swedish organisations presented the „complicated“ alliance abroad as your version is false. The earliest and most hard opponent to Attac Sweden was Friends of the Earth Sweden, but as we are not leftists we were not as useful to attack for Attac in Sweden, instead they created this false vision of quarreling leftists who opposed thei politcially neutral book fair process. They succeded in their blaming on left party egoism to have Kvarnby Folk High School and Anti racist academy to withdrew from central posts and making the whole prepatory process to diminish when it need to expand. Their vision of a politically neutral book fair was uninteresting to volunteers who tend to be politicaall motivated. Thus much of the practical work collapsed in the hands of a staff of which half came from Attac while the proportion of Attac among the volunteers was drastically less.
